Governing Body

The government in The Hive is a monarchy. The monarch does not have too much power because we do not want her to abuse it, but she has many important responsibilities to keep our society running smoothly. The monarch is expected to look over the internal affairs of The Hive. She makes important decisions with the consent of the citizens of The Hive. She also makes sure that everyone receives the same amount of money. No one is allowed to be richer than the rest of the people, and no once can be left behind.

A monarch is elected based on her honesty and leadership capabilities. She is to serve one term of five years, but if the people suspect that the monarch is abusing her power and using it for personal purposes, she can be voted out of office if two-thirds or more of the people want a new monarch.

Utopian's Animal

The bee represents the people of The Hive. The Hiveans living in the city work hard five days a week to keep the community running. Every single person works, unless they are sick, or if they are too young or old. Bees, like the Hiveans, work hard making honey for the community and protecting their hive from intruders.

Invitation to Friends

Dear Jacob,

You have to come visit me at The Hive. I'm sorry about leaving you last year, but this new place that I am living is great! I really miss you. If you come to The Hive, you might like it so much that you will just stay here with me. I remember last year when we were complaining about the problems in our city. For example, you told me about how you hated the lazy rich people who had most of the money in the city and wanted even more. At The Hive, there are none of those problems. Everyone in our community works and everyone makes the same amount of money. This was the exact system that you described in your utopia. It will be a perfect fit for you. Hope to see you soon.

Your friends,
Ben and Elizabeth

Elizabeth's Journal

Feb. 23, 2009
Dear Journal,
Today was a great day. Mom made a great breakfast (pancakes and smoked sausage.) Also, Mom and Dad announced that I was going to have another sibling! Gosh, I hate being an only child. Things get a bit lonely. I’m hoping for a little brother. I went to school that day and I was so excited to tell my friends of what happened. They are all really excited and Susan is hoping that I have a little sister so her little brother and my little sister can possibly date. During school, we learned more about chemistry and some things about the elements. I’m really hoping that I become a scientist of some sort. I really like mixings chemicals and doing experiments. Nothing new happened during lunch except that Hannah wanted to plan her birthday during the weekend for next week. Everyone is hoping that her party will be really fun. After school, Grandma picked me up because Mom and Dad were a bit caught up at work. They came home at about 7:30, so dinner was a little bit late. Luckily, Grandma and Grandpa had already cooked. For dinner we had roasted chicken, scallop potatoes and some greens. It was sooooo tasty. After dinner, we all talked about our days and I finished up my homework. Since I finished my homework early, I helped my dad organize his office. I can’t wait for the next day. I’m excited to talk to Mom and Dad about the baby and when we find out if it’s a boy or girl. Tomorrow will be great.
-Elizabeth.

Ben's Journal

Dear Journal,

Today was the first day of the new school year! I love the first days of school. My sister, Ann, graduated from middle school last semester and is now going to Honeycomb High School with me! I was so excited for this new school year that I couldn't even sleep last night. I finished my daily morning routine a full hour before the start of school.

The first class I went to was chemistry. It's my favorite subject at school. The two hours of chem in the morning will definately help me wake up in the morning. After that, I have two hours of math and another two hours of English. I end my day with The Hive History. I just love how our classes are so long!

When I went home, Ann talked to me about her classes. She's already making a lot of friends at Honeycomb High. We spent the rest of the night discussing doing our homework. I'm glad that they're giving us more homework this school year so we can be better prepared for the important exams.

Chadwick's Journal

Dear Journal,

Today was just awful. 8:00am came just a bit too early this morning, but I had to get up to keep things flowing. I mean, can you imagine how selfish it would be of me to sleep in while the others kept on going? Anyway, I felt better after we ate breakfast and worked out. Everything at school was fine too. Everyone was busy taking notes and doing their work. It made me feel so accomplished, even though I still have 12 years of school left. (I'll be 26 already!) Man, oh man; everything was weird after lunch though. Mrs. Honeycomb pulled me out of the bustling crowd and took me to the office. There were two Drones (Hivean Society Protectors) wait for me. They asked how many brothers and sisters I had. I told them there was me; my older brother, Kristopherson; my younger brother, Bartholomue; and my new brother, Maximus. They sent me back to class. When I got home with my brothers, I saw that my parents had grim expressions on their faces. Maximus ran upstairs and then into the kitchen to look for Nana. But then when he came back into the living room, I knew she was one. We had 7 in our family, one past the limit. Since Nana was too old to work, they put her into a retirement apartment. I dunno what to think. But then...I guess its the best thing for The Hive. This is home.
